A former technical advisor and coach for the U.S. Soccer Federation has joined the Wilmington Hammerheads as technical director, according to an announcement by the team and by the Capelli Sports Group.

As technical director, Carson Porter will work directly with Hammerheads' general manager Jason Arnold on player personnel decisions, club philosophy, curriculum and the planning of training sessions, according to the club's news release.

Porter had a diverse set of responsibilities in his role with the U.S. Soccer Federation, for which he was based in Denver and in New York City, the release stated. He helped scout, manage and oversee the U.S. Development Academy, a league run by U.S. Soccer that aims to provide a platform for the top youth players in the U.S. to compete.

He also served as an assistant coach for the U-14 and U-15 U.S. Youth National Teams, according to the release, and most recently has spent the last year as the assistant coach with the U-18 Men’s National Team.

"In his role with U.S. Soccer he travelled extensively, gaining great experiences in international tournaments throughout the world. He most recently was part of the staff that took the U.S. U-18 team to an international tournament in Lisbon, Portugal where they competed against Sweden, Norway and Portugal," the release stated.

Carson, who is originally from Charlotte, played college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 to 2001.
