Community Counseling Center Grows With Grants

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted May 1, 2018
The Community Counseling Center, a nonprofit mental health provider has received a $30,000 grant from Cape Fear Memorial Foundation, along with a $30,000 challenge grant from Live Oak Bank, according to a news release.

With these funds, the center will expand its clinical staff and increase the number of people receiving mental health care, officials said in the release. The Community Counseling Center offers counseling and psychotherapy by licensed professionals on a sliding scale fee.

“We are committed to accepting every person who calls for help,” Jonathan Kelley, executive director, said in the release. “The full market rate for mental health care is more than many people can afford, and it’s our mission to bring this care to everyone, regardless of ability to pay.”

In New Hanover County, more than one in ten people experience frequent mental distress, including anxiety and depression. Officials said options for quality, affordable care are limited and waiting times can be long.

“We are extremely grateful for this funding from Cape Fear Memorial Foundation and Live Oak Bank,” said Carol Steen, president of the Center’s Board of Directors, in the release. “These positive responses from our own community will, in turn, help us sustain our interaction with persons who are facing life challenges.”
