Area Groups Receive Grants

By Emily Mohorn, posted Jun 7, 2016
Several local nonprofits recently announced grants for their program.

Susan G. Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast gave $50,000 to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for the NHRMC Foundation Pink Ribbon Project. The donation will fund 300 mammogram screenings for testing in Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender counties, according to a news release. The sponsored expansion will allow the Pink Ribbon Project to reach more low-income and medically undeserved women, the release stated.

The Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation recently granted Good Shepherd Center $3,000 in support of the program’s dedication to serving the homeless and hungry, a news release said. In the past, Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation has helped Good Shepherd Center serve meals, decorate the shelter for holidays and collect drives.

Vertex Outreach Services awarded Smart Start of New Hanover County a $2,500 grant to fund BLOCK Fest. BLOCK Fest is a research-based exhibit that highlights a more interactive, guided play for children while creating a math-friendly culture, officials said. Smart Start is offering BLOCK fest in the 2016-17 fiscal year.
