Perkeo Serves Sunday Brunch With A Twist

By Liz Biro, posted Dec 11, 2013

Brunch is served with a lively program at downtown Perkeo Wine Bistro.

Every other Sunday, the restaurant hosts free drag shows during brunch service. The next performances are scheduled for Dec. 15.

Three acts mix comedy, song, dance and bright costumes during two sets – the first at 1 p.m. and the second at 4 p.m.

Perkeo, 114 Market St., is open noon-6 p.m. on Sunday.

Along with the regular menu, Perkeo features brunch specials, including three kinds of mimosas: cranberry, apple and classic orange, owners Lynn Adkins and Malissa Mashburn said. Off-menu brunch options might include caramelized onion quiche and shrimp and grits, the women said.

Perkeo’s wine list includes 50 labels by the glass or bottle. Another 75 wines are available by the bottle only. Ten beers – domestic, imported and draft – are offered.

The business debuted this fall in a building that previously hosted Deluxe restaurant, which closed in November 2012.

Perkeo, pronounced “per-kay-o,” is named for an 18th-century, Heidelberg court jester born in Italy. His name was Giovanni Clementi, but he earned the nickname Perkeo by seldom refusing wine. When asked if he wanted a glass, Clementi usually answered with the Italian “Perche no?” which is pronounced “per-kay no” and means “Why not?”
