Former Deluxe Owner Arrested

By Vicky Janowski, posted Nov 16, 2012

Plans to continue the brand of recently shuttered Deluxe elsewhere in Wilmington appear to be up in the air after the arrest of the restaurant’s owner.

Scott Haulman, who owned Deluxe restaurant before it shut down earlier this month, was arrested early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Wrightsvile Beach police said Haulman was pulled over at about 12:30 a.m. on the east side of Keel Street.

He faces charges of driving while impaired, having unsealed wine or liquor in the car, carrying a concealed gun and carrying a concealed weapon, which authorities said related to a dagger that was allegedly between the car’s seat and console.

Haulman remained in custody in the New Hanover County jail Friday.

According to jail officials, Haulman also faces a civil contempt charge.

He is being held under a $35,800 bond, of which $30,800 will have to be paid in cash because of the civil contempt charge.

Haulman, a longtime restaurateur, was shut out of Deluxe on Nov. 2 after he and his landlord for the building at 114 Market St. failed to reach a new lease agreement to reduce the space’s monthly rent.

In 2003, Haulman had purchased Deluxe, which started as a coffee shop in 1995.

After the restaurant space’s closure, Haulman said he was considering new locations downtown and uptown and would try to stage Deluxe holiday party reservations at various spots.

Meantime, Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Lucy Crockett said there was a report of property damage at the former Deluxe space. A neighbor reported that the front, glass door was broken.

Crockett said she had not yet seen the police report about the damage and did not see that anyone had been cited in the incident.
