Brunswick Novant Medical Center announced Monday that Shelbourn Stevens will be the hospital's new president.

Stevens has served as interim president at the Brunswick County facility since March when former president, Denise Mihal, became chief operating officer for Winston-Salem based Novant Health’s Winston-Salem area and eastern markets.

Stevens has worked for Novant Health for more than 20 years, according to a press release. He started with the company in 1990 as a respiratory therapist and has worked in a variety of departments, including recently as senior director of operations for Brunswick Novant.

"As senior director of operations for the hospital, Shelbourn has helped our physicians and employees to achieve success on a number of measures, from quality of care to patient and employee satisfaction," Mihal said in a statement.  "He was also instrumental in the building of and move to our new hospital last year."

Before moving to Brunswick Novant in 2006, Stevens was director of cardiopulmonary services for Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from High Point University, and completed his master’s degree in business administration at Garner Webb University.
