As technology has changed over the past several decades, Wilmington-based digitus89 has adapted, both in its services and its identity.
Originally founded in 1989 by Ray Rogers – the firm’s current president – as Cape Fear Machines Inc., the company counted selling and fixing typewriters and fax machines among its offerings.
The company went through several name changes to reflect the changing nature of its services. It became Cape Fear Computer Center, then Cape Fear Webmasters, then digitus89 last year.
As Internet usage evolved and IT requirements changed in the area, the company expanded its focuses. It the late-’90s, it became the second Internet Service Provider in Wilmington, according to the company. It launched website development for the real estate industry; it got into providing a commercially developed content management system.
Today, the company offers multiple digital services for real estate, business and IT-based companies, officials said.
“We offer the full scope of Information Technology solutions for businesses. Web development, web hosting, graphic design, digital marketing, virtual tours and video,” Paul Ward, senior account manager, who has been with the company since 1997, said in an email.
The most recent name change to digitus89 was chosen to reflect the array of services the company provides.
“Due to changing technology and with the addition of more services, we wanted a name that did not promote just one service (web/computer). We wanted to show that we do all things digital,” Ward said.
Aside from the new name, the company has launched a third version of Broker IDX and Agent IDX for its real estate clients.
“We have continued to lead in aerial photography locally,” Ward said.
They offer virtual tours and floor plans, as well, using a Phantom 4K Drone and HD panoramic cameras.
“Longevity is the main thing that sets us apart from others in the industry,” Ward said. “As a 27-year-old company we have a proven track record of responding to the ever-changing demands of technology. We have a unique ability to understand what the customer needs based on our years of varied experience. Our clients are local, regional, national and international.”
