A store that features local artists and jewelers is expanding its offerings in its new Mayfaire Town Center storefront.

Going Local, owned by Michelle Conely, relocated to the space that was previously home to J. Crew, 6807 Main St., before the national clothing retailer closed its Mayfaire Town Center location earlier this year.

Before that, Going Local was on the Michaels side of Mayfaire at 6859 Monument Drive.

"We have been very pleased with the new location," Conely said in an email. "This venue allows us the ability to better showcase the artists. We now have a more formal setting for the gallery and room to house more artists."

In addition to paintings, pottery, jewelry and other local art and handmade gifts, Going Local also offers workshops for individuals and groups.

"We are designing a more efficient classroom for our art classes," Conely said.

She said Going Local has a new featured artist every month and is currently showcasing the works of William Love, a Wilmington graphic designer and artist whose paintings feature marine life and beachgoers.

Going Local will also be featuring the paintings of Mike Watters, including his Fishbone Collection, inspired by the fish that are at risk of becoming extinct, Conely said. The opening reception date will be announced on Facebook, she said.

Another upcoming exhibit will focus on ocean plastics, Conely added.

Coming soon to the store is the work of David Baum, jewelry designer, who designed the pendants and rings for locally shot TV show Sleepy Hollow and the film Safe Haven, which was also shot in the Cape Fear region.

Baum "will be reproducing a limited collection exclusively for the shop, including a few pieces that didn’t make the show. David’s resume also includes some Pandora Beads, a Super Bowl ring and also the film The Conjuring," Conely said. "He also plans to come out with a line of bracelets, charms and rings to do with iconic Southern culture."
