The Moravian Covenant Church of Wilmington has partnered with Dewey’s Bakery for the second annual Dewey’s Bakery pop-up shop at Mayfaire Town Center.

Perhaps best known for thin and crispy Moravian cookies and cheese straws that are sold under the Salem Baking Co. label, Dewey’s has been a North Carolina institution for nearly 90 years.

Founded in downtown Winston-Salem in 1930, it was the area’s first all-electric bakery. Original offerings included sugar cakes and cookies and Lovefeast buns. Today, Dewey’s specializes in everything from cupcakes to wedding cakes, as well as a large selection of Moravian cookies and crackers and ice cream.
 
Annual holiday favorites include cranberry orange and ginger spice cookies, as well as the signature collection of chocolate dipped cookies in flavors such as mint, blood orange, toasted coconut and salted caramel.  

Holiday shaped sugar cookies covered in chocolate and peppermint were top sellers last year, and the shop tripled its order for this season. 

On the savor side, a variety of new crackers are available in flavors such as Cajun cheddar, Carolina barbecue, tomato basil, and sriracha cheddar. 

Staffed by volunteers from the church, a portion of the sales will go toward funding the church’s outreach programs for the coming year, said store manager George Elam. 

“Our outreach programs include funding for the local Backpack Buddies program, our food pantry and Blue Jean Sundays, which are opportunities for church members to conduct yard work, gardening and minor home repairs for those in need throughout the community,” Elam said. 

The shop also carries illuminated Moravian stars in two sizes and a number of crafts made by church members. Moravian spice tea and hot chocolate are also available. 

Located inside Santa’s Workshop at 980 Inspiration Drive, the bakery will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. each Sunday through Dec. 23.
