Dave Monaghan, owner of Causeway Café in Wrightsville Beach, announced Friday that the restaurant will be closing its doors after 32 years in business.
The last day of operation by the current owner of the restaurant at 114 Causeway Drive will be Nov. 4.
Monaghan told customers, via the restaurant’s Facebook page, that the time has come for retirement.
“It’s been a tough decision, but I’ve been thinking about it for about four months now,” said the 63-year-old Monaghan. “It’s time to go have a life.”
A favorite among locals and visitors, the Causeway has served a full range of breakfast and brunch items since 1987.
“This restaurant has played such a huge role in our lives since 1987 as we’ve seen family, customers, employees, and our own selves grow up in these tables and booths,” Monaghan said in the post. “But as all good things must come to an end, we’re very much looking forward to spending more time with family and friends in wonderful Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington.”
Monaghan went on to thank customers for their business and support, and to say that he hopes a potential buyer is out there that will perhaps carry on the Causeway, which he describes as a Southern-style beach café.
“I’ve dedicated a third of my life to this restaurant so of course I’d love to see someone carry it on,” Monaghan said. “I can’t imagine how I’m going to feel walking out the door on the last day.”
