Black Sea Grill Restoration Underway

A restoration project is now underway at the Black Sea Grill, according to co-owner Kristin Aktas.

The family-owned restaurant in downtown Wilmington sustained significant water damage when a pipe in an upper-level condo ruptured in mid-June, forcing an immediate closure. Since that time, the family has been awaiting a pending insurance claim to cover the cost of the damages.

Now that the claim has been finalized, Aktas and her husband, Cem, who own the business with her parents, John and Monica Murrisky, are working with Paul Davis Restoration of Wilmington to renovate the restaurant at 118 S. Front St.

Kristin Aktas said the architectural plans are still being finalized, and the layout will likely remain the same, but there will definitely be some changes to the look of the restaurant.

“Some customers have been worried because even our phone lines are down,” she said. “All of that needs to be replaced as part of the restoration.”

The family says they want to reassure customers that plan to reopen as soon as the renovation is complete. As for now, they are hoping the work will be done in six to eight weeks.

“It has been difficult missing out on the summer season,” Kristin Aktas said. “But we will be celebrating our 10-year anniversary this December and have a loyal customer base to thank for that.”

Cem Aktas added that while this has been a major hiccup for the business, it’s not just about money.

“For us, the business is about the relationships that we have built with the community,” he said. “We have customers who had some of their first dates in our restaurant, and now they have children. It’s all about continuing those relationships.”
