Wilmington has tied with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the No. 1 spot in moving and storage company PODS' fifth annual Moving Trends Report. 

Tuesday's announcement marks the third year Wilmington has been recognized as one of the most moved-to cities in the U.S. by PODS customers. The report analyzed net long-distance moves from January 2024 to March 2025.

“We’re honored to once again be recognized as a top destination, and we remain committed to meeting this moment with thoughtful leadership and a deep respect for what makes our city unique,” said Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo.

According to this year's report, Wilmington and Myrtle Beach have been ranked at the top of the PODS list for three consecutive years due to their affordability, welcoming community, mild climate, laid-back lifestyle, and access to nature, appealing to retirees and families.

“Our fifth annual Moving Trends Report underscores the major trends that have shaped Americans’ moving patterns and preferences over the past few years—an assumed desire for warmer climates, lower costs of living and a greater focus on balance and quality of life,” said Rich Schwartz, senior vice president of corporate operations at PODS.

Saffo said that as more people move to Wilmington, the city has been ramping up its services to accommodate the expanding population.

“We know that growth brings both opportunity and responsibility,” Saffo said. “That’s why we’ve made strategic investments in infrastructure, from improving roadways and stormwater systems to expanding greenways and parks.”

The PODS report stated that one of the primary reasons people have relocated to the Wilmington area in recent years is not just the cost of living, but also the appealing lifestyle it offers. Saffo said local officials aim to protect the citizens of Wilmington and the area's natural resources.

“Public safety remains a top priority, and we’re committed to ensuring Wilmington remains a safe, welcoming place for all who call it home,” Saffo said. “We’re also working closely with partners at the local and state levels to address housing affordability, grow our tree canopy and protect our most precious resource, our water. “

For the second consecutive year, the Carolinas have the highest number of cities ranked on the PODS list, including the most cities in the top 10. North Carolina continues to attract new residents with its lower cost of living, job opportunities, access to outdoor activities and Southern hospitality, according to the report. With five out of the 20 top cities people are moving to in 2025, North Carolina ranks as the most sought-after state on this year's list.

Neighboring Tennessee is also noteworthy, with four cities making the ranks, establishing it as one of the most popular states to move to and one to keep an eye on, according to the report.

The report said people continue to leave once-popular megacities characterized by high living costs and dense populations and opt for smaller, more spacious cities and towns.
