Housing Coalition Takes Homeowners Education To Brunswick County

By Staff Reports, posted Sep 13, 2024
Cape Fear Housing Coalition is hosting a Brunswick County Homeowner Education Series throughout the months of September and October to help older homeowners "prepare for their next phase of life and learn about tools, tips and opportunities for support," according to a news release.

Amy Davis, education and advocacy chair for the housing coalition, stated in the release, “The Homeowner Education Series is our effort to connect community members to the resources they need to age in place safely and without additional legal or financial burdens. The Wills Clinic will help homeowners ensure their wishes can be honored in the future in regards to their property, will preserve existing affordable housing in our community, and protect our community against predatory practices that target generational family homes.”

The four-part series will address:
  • Aging in place and home safety;
  • Medicaid planning, estate recovery, and protecting real property;
  • The important of wills;
  • Property tax relief; and
  • Heir property issues.

The sessions mark the second offering of the coalition's education series – the first was offered in New Hanover County in 2023. This year’s events will take place Sept. 18-Oct. 25 in Brunswick County to serve residents from Leland to Southport "to ensure we are sharing resources with the entire Cape Fear area our Coalition serves," the release stated. Specific times and locations are available online.

The series will culminate in a Free Wills Clinic later this year, where low-income senior homeowners will have the opportunity to work with attorneys, notaries, and support staff to establish a will at no cost.

The program, co-sponsored by Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity and Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc., is free and open to the public. Neighbors from Pender and New Hanover Counties can also attend, the release stated. Registration in advance is required because space is limited.

According to the release, "Family members, caregivers, or service providers are welcome to attend along with or on behalf of a senior."

Participants can register online or call (910) 762-4744, ext. 134.

The Cape Fear Housing Coalition is a nonprofit, nonpartisan all-volunteer coalition comprised of over 140 partner organizations.
