The Historic Wilmington Foundation has put its headquarters on the market with a list price of $650,000.

The 3,100-square-foot house at 211 Orange St., which has four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, was built in 1912. According to property tax records, HWF bought the property for $375,000 in 2019 from the Walter M. Bullard Jr. Trust.

“As an organization dedicated to preserving the irreplaceable historic resources of Wilmington and the Lower Cape Fear region, we have carefully considered this decision,” said Isabelle Shepherd, interim executive director of HWF, in an email Tuesday. “The limitations of the location no longer meet our evolving needs, and we are delighted to return this property to its intended residential use in the Residential Historic District (HD-R).”

Jan Brewington of Dram Tree Realty is the listing agent for 211 Orange St. HWF’s new offices are at Church of the Good Shepherd’s Burton Whiteside Hall at 511 Queen St.

Since the organization began as an offshoot of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, HWF has been in various buildings. The foundation’s previous homes include the deRosset House (now City Club), Governor Dudley Mansion and the manse at St. Andrews (now the Brooklyn Arts Center).

Shepherd wrote, “We are proud to have maintained and celebrated the historical significance of these properties before passing them on to new caretakers. Rest assured, a preservation easement – the strongest tool for historic preservation – will ensure this beautiful building is protected for future generations.”

Correction: This version corrects the address for Church of the Good Shepherd's Burton Whiteside Hall.
