Senior living community Plantation Village this week marked the start of a project that will add homes and amenities to the 58-acre campus.

Located at 1200 Porters Neck Road in Wilmington, the community is home to 300 residents in apartments and villas. At a cost of nearly $57 million, the first phase of the expansion project includes adding 44 homes in four new buildings, along with new indoor and outdoor dining venues and services.

“A great deal of thought and planning has gone into this expansion, so we are thrilled to actually break ground and move forward in what is going to be a three-phase expansion campaign,” said Jolynn Whitten, executive director of Plantation Village, in a news release.

The design and construction team is CJMW Architecture and Frank L Blum Construction, both of Winston-Salem.

Floor plans include the Heron Cove, a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home starting at 1,400 square feet, and Magnolia Walk, a two-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home starting at 1,515 square feet that includes under-building garage parking.

“One unique aspect of each of the new homes is the addition of a ‘You’ room within each floor plan,” said Whitten in the release. “This room honors the individuality of each resident and can be customized to the resident’s needs and interests. For instance, it can act as a media room, a music room or whatever the resident desires.”

A nonprofit Life Plan Community, Plantation Village was created in 1988 on property donated by retired railroad executive Champion “Champ” McDowell Davis and is managed by Iowa-based firm Life Care Services.
