Plans for a Wawa convenience store and gas station are under review on Oleander Drive in Wilmington.

Representatives for Wawa recently submitted plans for the approximately 6,300-square-foot store at the corner of Oleander and Englewood drives. The project is slated for a vacant 1.6-acre tract just east of Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park.

Several gas station brands, including Wawa, Sheetz, 7-Eleven and Royal Farms, have announced plans in recent years to expand into the Wilmington market. Last year, Wawa officials said they were eyeing 10 sites for new locations across the Cape Fear region.

Wawa had previously identified 5400 Oleander Drive – a tract east of the current location and the former site of restaurant Hops Supply Co. – as a potential development site.

Site plans show this latest project would include eight fuel pumps under a fuel canopy and 50 parking spaces. As of Tuesday, the proposal was under review by Wilmington planning officials. A Wawa representative did not immediately respond Tuesday to a request for comment on the project.

Based on a traffic impact analysis, planning officials recommend constructing a northbound left turn lane on Englewood Drive, an eastbound right turn lane on Oleander Drive, pedestrian crosswalks and two driveways to access the convenience store.

According to property records, the site is owned by JR Family Holdings LLC, a limited liability corporation managed by Jungle Rapids owners Robert and Jennifer Rippy.

A rezoning is not needed for the project to move forward on the site, but the plans will undergo technical review from local officials to ensure they meet the city’s design standards.
