Franchise YogaSix is on the way to a space at Mayfaire.

The yoga studio is expected to open this year at 6805 Parker Farm Drive, Suite 165, in the Harris Teeter-anchored Mayfaire Community Center.

“I’ve been doing yoga for several years … I was weightlifting and running, and a friend of mine coaxed me into a class,” said Wilmington franchise owner Corey Huck, “and I really fell in love with yoga.”

Huck said he’s hoping for an October opening if the 2,500-square-foot studio’s permitting and construction stay on track. A New Balance shoe store previously occupied the storefront.

YogaSix is a new franchise for Wilmington. The studio will offer six unique yoga classes, from restorative yoga to heated power yoga, in an atmosphere that’s welcoming for a broader group of clients, Huck said.

“It’s really meant to reach out to a lot of people,” he said.

Huck, who has lived in Hampstead since 2012, hired general manager Jen McGlynn to run the Wilmington studio. McGlynn previously launched and managed two YogaSix franchises in California.

Outside of yoga, Huck has worked full time for large companies for more than 30 years. Most recently, he started a biological division – using natural-based products to help crops grow better – for a global multinational company.

"So this is my first foray into entrepreneurship and starting something that's my own," he said.

According to the YogaSix website, the company, founded in 2012, has more than 200 studios and more than 630 licensed locations across the globe.

McGlynn and Huck aren’t waiting until October to introduce the franchise to Wilmington residents.

“We’ll start doing some yoga classes outside the studio while it’s being built out,” Huck said, and a limited number of founding membership are available at a discounted rate.

He said he’s also planning another YogaSix location, possibly in the Porters Neck area.
