The owners of Biggers Market plan to continue growing their fresh food and farm goods business in Wilmington.
They’re seeking the rezoning of 2.67 acres at 6208, 6216 and 6218 Carolina Beach Road to build a full-size market like the one Biggers operates at 6250 Market St. Biggers currently has a location on Carolina Beach Road that has expanded over the years.
“It’s a good amount of floor space, but it’s still just a tent,” said Sven Wallin, who developed the business plan for what would eventually become Biggers Market while he was a student at Appalachian State University.
Wallin said the timeline for a potential new Biggers on Carolina Beach Road is uncertain, but it would help meet the demand for fresh foods and farm goods.
“It can be open longer and serve more of a purpose like our Market Street location does,” Wallin said. “We want to have more offerings than we currently have.”
The rezoning request would change the property’s designation from current district overlays, highway business (B-2) and residential (R-15), to conditional community business (CZD/CB).
“The project is being proposed by Biggers Market, an establishment with a goal of stimulating agricultural growth in the Carolinas by promoting clean, healthy living, with local fruits and vegetables and other regional products,” according to a letter to nearby property owners announcing a community meeting on the rezoning.
According to the letter from Biggers posted on New Hanover County’s website, the meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Best Western Plus–Wilmington, 5600 Carolina Beach Road.
Founded in 2010, Biggers first opened under the name Port City Produce before rebranding in 2020. The Biggers Market on Market Street operates from mid-March to Dec. 22, according to its website, while the existing Carolina Beach Road Biggers location is open from April until the end of October.
