On Oleander Drive, Former Skating Rink Rolls Toward Next Use

The property at 5216 Oleander Drive in Wilmington held a skating rink for about four decades before the latest business to occupy it, Jelly Beans Family Skate Center, closed last year.

An entire Facebook group is dedicated to remembering one of its earliest incarnations, Sports World.

Owned by a Sanders family entity, the property got a facelift after Jelly Beans closed, and it's now available for lease.

Mike Nadeau, broker and owner of Creative Commercial Properties, which has offices in Wilmington and Hampstead, said his company recently began marketing it.

"We are in the process of promoting it, looking for a tenant ideally for the whole space but we're open to possibilities," Nadeau said.

The facility is 26,000 square feet, a similar size to a medium-sized grocery store, with 113 parking spaces.

Nadeau said potential tenants could include national retailers, a church activity center or a variety of indoor entertainment uses (when COVID-19 restrictions on such venues are lifted).

It's not likely to ever be a skating rink again, he said, although the rink is still there because the renovation work mainly consisted of replacing the roof and exterior upgrades.

"All the remnants of the old skating rink are there to some degree, but it doesn't make sense to get too far ahead tearing stuff out and building stuff back until you know who's coming in and what their needs are," Nadeau said.
