A Georgia hospitality firm plans to build a hotel at The Pointe at Barclay in midtown Wilmington.

Owner Mehul Patel of Ideal Hospitality Investments Inc. said Thursday that the company intends to create a four-story, 108- to 110-room Home2 Suites by Hilton beside The Pointe 14 movie theater.

Wilmington Hotel Investors LLC, an entity of Ideal Hospitality of Pooler, Georgia, bought the property, a little over 2 acres, in May for $1.2 million. It previously belonged to Barclay Commons Retail II LLC.

The Home2 Suites at The Pointe will be one of the first Wilmington hotels for Ideal Hospitality, an owner-operator company that has hotels throughout the Southeast, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

The company is also planning a La Quinta Inn in Wilmington, according to the firm's website, although it doesn't give an exact location.

"Wilmington's a great market and a market that we feel is going to keep growing," Patel said of choosing The Pointe location. "There's a lot of tourism; there's a lot of corporate business. There's a lot of larger companies that are looking into Wilmington."

He said guests will also likely result from the new Home2 Suites proximity to downtown Wilmington and New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The Pointe at Barclay, a dining and entertainment complex anchored by the theater and bordered by South 17th Street and Independence Boulevard, is a development by Cameron Management of Wilmington and Charlotte-based Collett. Currently, a Midtown Park office building and two new retail buildings are under construction at The Pointe, including a dental practice. The retail structures are expected to be delivered by early 2020.

Ideal Hospitality is set to break ground on the Home2 Suites, a limited service, extended-stay brand that has some kitchen amenities, at The Pointe by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year, Patel said.

"We're going through design right now," he said. "We're using a lot of local civil engineers and we're going through the project right now and plan to have the drawings completed by the end of September, beginning of October."

Hill Rogers and Bryan Greene of Cameron Management represented the seller, Barclay Commons Retail, in the transaction while Patel and Ideal Hospitality were represented by Marcello Caliva of Intracoastal Realty.

Site plans were submitted last year for a Home2 Suites by Hilton to be built at 5518 Market St. by The Generations Companies of Raleigh, and the city's project tracking website states that those plans are still under review.
