More retail and service options for the furry members of the family are coming to Wilmington with several businesses slated to open soon.

Camp Run-A-Mutt, a cage-free dog daycare and boarding franchise at 2541 Carolina Beach Road, has planned a pre-opening party from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and its official opening Monday, according to a news release.

Owners John and Lisa Johns and their daughter Jenna Johns purchased the property and 11,000 square feet building, previously a buffet restaurant, earlier this year and have been renovating it for six months, Jenna Johns said.

“We had to demo the entire building because it had restaurant equipment. We put up dry wall, did repairs on bathrooms, installed new flooring including rubber flooring and new lighting,” Jenna Johns said. “We created a lobby and behind it is a multi-purpose training room and a big indoor boarding room divided into two separate play areas. Where the kitchen used to be, we will be feeding the dogs and have our over-night boarding. We want to keep dogs outside for the most part, so we fenced off a portion of the parking lot, and installed AstroTurf.”

The outside area also includes a pond for the dogs to splash in.

Besides boarding and daycare, Camp Run-A-Mutt will also offer grooming and obedience training and will feature Muttcams, where owners can watch their dogs remotely.

The camp currently has 10 employees with plans of hiring eight more in the next year.

Price for half-day care is $22 and $51 for overnight stay.

Pawville, another pet daycare and boarding location, is also coming to Carolina Beach Road.

The new Pawville facility will be built behind Bone & Bean restaurant, according to Phil Miller, founder and CEO of Pawville.

The second location of Pet Supplies Plus at 134 Hays Lane is set to have a soft opening Sept. 20 and an official grand opening Oct.12

Local franchise owners Chris and Brittany Bennett opened the first area Pet Supplies Plus at 5940 Carolina Beach Road at the Beau Rivage Marketplace in July.

Chris Bennett said the store, which also offers grooming and a self-service dog wash, is opening near the Ogden area because there is a demand in that location for a specialty pet store business.

“Our reason for opening in north Wilmington is there is a significant need for a full-line retail pet store in that area,” Chris Bennett said in an email. “It’s a thriving area with strong demographics and population growth.”

In midtown Wilmington, a location of Ohio-based PetPeople is expected to open soon.

The pet supply store offers natural food and goods for dogs and cats and will be opening at Whole Foods-anchored Oleander Place at 3804 Oleander Drive.

The store, which is 5,768 square feet, will be located at the previous location of Mattress Firm and is the first PetPeople store in the Wilmington region.
