New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) and PPD were once again included on Forbes Magazine’s list of America’s Best Large Employers in 2019.

NHRMC ranked No. 131 and PPD, a contract research organization for pharmaceuticals, ranked No. 419 out of the 500 companies listed.

Last year, NHRMC ranked No. 47. PPD also ranked 354 on the list last year.

“This recognition is a result of the great work our team does every day, the outstanding engagement of our staff, and the phenomenal culture we have built at NHRMC," said John Gizdic, president and CEO of NHRMC, in a news release Monday.

NHRMC has a commitment to attract and retain the best employees through competitive benefits that include wellness programs, leadership development programs and a culture that embraces support for each other and the entire community, stated the release.

The hospital system includes the NHRMC main campus, Orthopedic Hospital, EMS, Home Care, Physician Group and the Pender Memorial Hospital. NHRMC has more than 7,000 employees, making it Southeastern North Carolina’s largest employer, according to the release.

PPD has 20,000 employees, according to the list, and was also included on the Forbes list of America’s Best Employers for Diversity.

“Our employees are passionate about improving health,” David Simmons, chairman and CEO of PPD, said in a news release. “Every day, across the globe, our talented professionals from a wide variety of disciplines collaborate as one PPD, pursuing excellence in customer service and leading innovation in clinical research. Their talent, ingenuity and commitment are our formula for extraordinary results in helping our customers develop safe, effective new medicines for patients.”

The Best Large Employers list was created through a partnership between Forbes and Statista, a market research company, which surveyed 50,000 workers at 2,700 U.S. companies.

The workers were asked to evaluate their employers with open-ended questions based on atmosphere, pay and working conditions.

Other North Carolina employers that ranked on the list include Duke University in Durham which has 20,335 employees and Duke Energy, which has 29,060 employees.

Trader Joe’s came in at No.1 on the list of America’s Largest Employers this year. The grocery chain offers health insurance, retirement plans and store managers earn over $100,000 a year, according to Statista.
