Cooper Expected To Announce New Employer For Area Friday

Gov. Roy Cooper is expected to announce Friday which New Jersey-based business plans to bring more than 200 jobs to the northern Brunswick County town of Navassa.

Dana Fisher, executive director of the North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce, said officials have been invited to an event just before noon Friday at the anticipated site of the announcement and the property where the company plans to set up shop, 101 Quality Drive.

Fisher, who as of Thursday morning did not yet know the company's name, said the president of the North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce board, John Lerch of ATMC, is scheduled to attend the announcement.

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in January to support a Rural Development Building Reuse Grant application in the area's efforts, called "Project Pavement," to attract the still-unnamed company to the former U.S. Marine building. The grant will aid in the building's renovations. 

The Navassa facility has been identified as a suitable location for the company’s manufacturing and warehousing needs, as well as anticipated growth within the company, the resolution earlier this year stated.

The application request was for $700,000, requiring a $35,000 match from the county.

The application would still need to be approved by the Rural Infrastructure Authority within the state commerce department, and the panel is expected to consider it April 22, said Bill Early, executive director of Brunswick Business & Industry Development (Brunswick BID). The RIA is a 16-member board that awards rural, Community Development Block Grant and Utility Account grant funds.

Project Pavement has been in the works for several months, and the Navassa property has been vacant since 2008.

Fisher said whichever company will be announced, the news is welcome.

"I think it's just going to pave the way for more businesses and more things to come," Fisher said. "This will be just the start of what can happen there, the start of the business expansion in that area."
