New Fitness Facilities Take Shape In Area

By Johanna Cano, posted Jan 8, 2019
New Year’s resolutions often include goals to get in shape, lose weight or become more active.

Some Wilmington gyms, including 9Round and Club Pilates, have plans to open new locations to meet the demand for more classes and workout options. Meanwhile, a new option is coming to South Kerr Avenue in the form of TF Fitness + Nutrition.

After less than a year in the Wilmington market, 9Round will have a second location at 3301 Masonboro Loop Road slated to open by the end of January.

With positive reception of the first 9Round location on Market Street, owners Lynnette and Perry Spinelli decided to open a second location to meet demand.

“We’ve been super well received,” Perry Spinelli said. “Not a lot of places incorporate kickboxing into the regimen. With the success there, we decided there is room for more. As you probably now, folks don’t like to travel too far.”

9Round consists of a 30-minute high-intensity circuit workout led by instructors. What makes 9Round appealing is that there is no set class time, members can drop-in at any time, and it involves a quick whole-body workout, Perry Spinelli said.

“We’ve seen a steady growth every month,” Perry Spinelli said. “Folks are very attracted to kickboxing for the total body workout and folks love the efficiency.”

9Round has seen an increase in new members so far this month and already has members lined up for the new location.

“There is interest in the new place; we have a considerable amount of pre-sales,” Perry Spinelli said. “It's very encouraging that the interest level is high, and people are looking for something different.”

In addition to 9Round, a Club Pilates facility is slated to open in May at Waterford Village in Leland, which will join two other Club Pilates locations in Wilmington, one at The Pointe at Barclay off South 17th Street and Independence Boulevard and another at The Forum on Military Cutoff Road.

The Leland Club Pilates location is opening to provide a place closer for current Club Pilates members who travel from Leland to Wilmington to attend classes, Mindy Agnoff, owner of two Club Pilates locations in Wilmington, said.

“A lot of my members come from Leland. We found a shopping center that we liked, and we are going for it,” Agnoff said. “There is a market that came to us and we are going to them.”

When opening her first Club Pilates, Agnoff expected to attract a number of young people, but that was not the case.

“I thought I would get a younger demographic, but we have an older demographic,” Agnoff said. “Any age can do Pilates. It’s so good for any age. It’s great for people who can no longer do high impact workouts.”

The Leland location hopes to promote membership sign-ups with its pre-sale in March of 20 percent off.

More classes were added at The Pointe location because memberships were overflowing, and they typically add many members in February.

“It’s not until February until we started really feeling people coming in. People are in that mindset to start the year off fresh,” Agnoff said.

Another new option coming this year is TF Fitness + Nutrition at 11 S. Kerr Avenue, on the corner of Market Street and Kerr Avenue.

"TF Fitness + Nutrition will offer the latest equipment and services in the fitness industry, with premier amenities like group fitness classes, personal training, stretching, corrective exercise and kids care," according to a news release. "The gym will also provide healthy nutrition assistance, a large selection of nutritional supplements and a smoothie bar. An exact opening date for the gym has not been set but will be announced as soon as possible."

The release stated that the owners of TF Fitness + Nutrition have over 25 years of experience in the fitness industry and business management. Skip Lennon, former Wilmington area Gold’s Gym partner, and his wife, Holly Lennon, will co-own and operate this Wilmington location. They have partnered with Jaime and Jay Gardner, who have owned and operated numerous restaurants in Eastern North Carolina for over 40 years.

"TF Fitness and Nutrition has been designed with the understanding that everyone needs a different approach to reach their fitness goals. Our gym will offer our members the amenities and motivation needed to stay on a healthy track at an affordable monthly rate. We are excited to bring our concept to Wilmington and provide a comfortable, healthy environment for all ages," Skip Lennon stated in the release.

Lennon added, "We will be working quickly to transform this space into our brand and will announce an opening date as soon as we can."

Editor's note: This version has been updated to include TF Fitness + Nutrition.
