At ILM, Regional Carrier's Technical Issues Cancel Flights

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Jun 18, 2018
Flight cancellations continued Monday at the Wilmington International Airport (ILM) as a result of technical issues with PSA Airlines, an American Airlines regional carrier.

A notice on ILM’s Twitter page Monday morning alerted area customers to check flight statuses with American Airlines before heading to the airport. The airliner announced June 14 that the “technical issue” with PSA Airlines caused it to cancel flights and a team had been working to resolve the issue.

As of Monday afternoon, four flights were canceled for inbound and outbound flights to Charlotte, Gary Broughton, deputy airport direction at ILM, said, adding that Charlotte is one of the major hub airports for American.

Over the weekend, there were six total cancellations of PSA Airline flights at ILM on Friday, five on Saturday and another five on Sunday; resulting in just over 1,200 passengers impacted by the technical outage, he said.

And airport officials are still watching flights on a day-by-day basis, he said

The bulk of the impact has involved flights to Charlotte, Broughton said. Other PSA Airline flights to Philadelphia were not impacted on Monday, he said. There was one flight cancellation on Saturday and Sunday to Washington Dulles International Airport.

Broughton said despite the cancellations, there have not been very many passengers stuck at the Wilmington airport overnight.

“I think the airline has done a good job with rebooking. I think rebooking is a challenge … they are trying to accommodate their American passengers as best they can regardless of which airline,” Broughton said, adding that some rebooked flights are taking place at ILM through its other major service carriers, Delta and United Airlines.

Broughton said that ILM officials have been notified that the Ohio-based airliner has brought in a team of IT techs to try to fix the issue.

“We are getting our information from the airline locally, and what they told us today is they don’t have an estimated time for repair yet with this new tech team they brought in,” Broughton said.

Broughton advised Wilmington flight travelers to keep checking with American Airlines for flight cancellations. ILM's arrivals and departures schedule can also be found online.
