Mayfaire Snags Art Gallery From Downtown Wilmington To Fill Vacant Space

Amy Grant tried to find more room for her business in downtown Wilmington.

"I hunted and hunted. I looked for a long time," said Grant, owner of Art in Bloom Gallery, "but it’s just booming. All the spaces that I thought we might be able to be in, they just weren’t available, which is a good sign for our economy."

Grant is in the process of moving her 7-year-old gallery from 210 Princess St. to 6866 Main St. in Mayfaire Town Center, where she'll have about 3,500 square feet as opposed to about 850 square feet of gallery space downtown.

The Princess Street location will close July 9, Grant said, and she anticipates opening the gallery at Mayfaire in late July. Art in Bloom will fill the space vacated by clothing store Pretties & Co.

Grant has experience with Mayfaire Town Center after opening a pop-up gallery for a couple of months last year, she said.

"It was just wonderful to show the large pieces of art," Grant said.

Established in 2015, Art in Bloom Gallery "presents an eclectic mix of original art by emerging and established artists. The gallery currently represents over 30 artists and celebrates the story and process of each artist plus the transformative power of original art," according to a news release.

Prior to July 9, special events will take place at 210 Princess St, "to thank the artists, customers, staff and everyone involved with the first 7 years of the gallery (2015 to present). More details will be announced soon," the release stated.

Current exhibits, which will be up through May 21, include Intimate Interiors: Pastels by Jeri Greenberg and Ceramics by Traudi Thornton and The Water of Life: Photography by Allison Bowman. Grant said the final art exhibit will feature artists working in contemporary ceramics, mixed media art and photography.

The show at Mayfaire will change every six weeks, Grant said. She said she believes the location change won't damage her customer base.

"With all these new people coming to town they shop at both areas," she said. "We had a lot of people who would visit us downtown and then come out to Mayfaire, a lot of people in Mayfaire who would go downtown. I think the only thing about downtown for me was I didn't have the space to really show what I wanted to show."
