Calling all business leaders and executives: are you interested in sharing your knowledge with and inspiring business students? UNCW’s Cameron Executive Network (CEN) is a network composed of 200 mentors and approximately 300 Cameron School of Business students that partner together in one-on-one mentorships to work on professional development, networking, and career planning.
Mentors and students are encouraged to meet every other week to build their mentor-mentee relationship. During these meetings, mentors assess students’ strengths, help them develop professional and personal skills as team players and leaders, and coach them in interviewing and networking skills. Mentors also help evaluate student resumes and guide them in conducting internships and job searches.
The Cameron Executive Network hosts events throughout the semester that allow students to practice their dining and networking etiquette. These are great opportunities for CEN mentors to get to know students outside of their own mentee(s).
CEN mentors also can serve as consultants during the Mock Interview Program that is part of Cameron’s “Career Essentials” Course that is required of all business majors. Mentors may also have the opportunity to serve as guest speakers to share their expertise in classroom lectures or as part of Cameron’s premiere event Business Week.
“It is very rewarding to be able to share insights, lessons learned, network opportunities and professional experiences with my mentees. I truly believe I learn as much from them, as they learn from me,” said Terri Kovarik, CEN mentor.
With the assistance of their mentors, students leave the Cameron School of Business feeling better prepared to enter the next phases of life. CEN mentors help to open doors that may have otherwise been missed opportunities for their students, with many of them forming bonds lasting far past graduation.
