BIZTALK: Atrium Health's NHRMC Proposal

By Vicky Janowski, posted May 14, 2020
Ken Haynes, Atrium Health’s greater Charlotte region president, spoke on Thursday's BizTalk about Atrium's proposal for New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Charlotte-based Atrium Health was one of six health systems that submitted pitches to either buy NHRMC or partner with the county-owned hospital. Atrium's proposal focuses on a long-term lease of the hospital -- over 40 years before it would become owner, with a pledge to spend $3.1 billion on New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the community. That includes upfront money, lease payments and capital project investments, including a behavioral health and addiction treatment facility.

“We’ve done our best to truly listen to the community," Haynes said. "We’ve been in multiple times with our physician component. We’ve been in with many local community providers … to touch base and understand what the local community needs, because our way of doing business is that we make sure health care is local. And we make sure we’re meeting the needs of the local community, and so this lease will allow us to do that.”

Last week the Partnership Advisory Group voted unanimously to focus on Duke Health, Atrium Health and Novant Health among the six health systems that submitted proposals. On Monday, NHRMC trustees also voted unanimously to back those picks for futhur talks. New Hanover County commissioners on Monday are slated will weigh in about the short list.
