Health Care Heroes: Physician

By Staff Reports, posted Nov 2, 2018
CHRISTOPHER COSGROVE
TITLE: Physician
ORGANIZATION: Intracoastal Internal Medicine
WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: “I don’t think there is a physician in Wilmington more dedicated to his patients. He pays such close attention to detail and makes sure that he never misses anything. Also, he is probably the humblest physician in New Hanover County (I’d argue in North Carolina/the United States). He so subtly cares for everyone around him and makes others’ health and wellbeing (even strangers) his number one priority.

I cannot tell you how many volleyball tournaments, golf tournaments and vacations we have been on where my dad has helped a stranger in need. He is ALWAYS the first to jump into action whether its a child suffering from a heat stroke, young athlete with a dislocated knee or man suffering with chest pain on the streets of Disney (these are all real scenarios).

People also don’t see what goes on behind the scenes – when he’s not in the office. Even after coming home from work, dad spends about 2 hours (or more) reviewing patient charts, looking over test results and calling patients to let them know results/diagnosis. Even when we are on vacation, he will call patients and work away from Wilmington.”

WILLIAM EAKINS
TITLE: Physician (Ret.)
ORGANIZATION: NHRMC Physician Group–New Hanover Medical Group
WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: “President of NHMG, now retired past president; New Hanover Pender Medical Society; community leader; practiced medicine for 40 years; New Hanover County leader in forming largest pure Primary Care Organization in Eastern North Carolina.”

-Neill Musselwhite

MORE INFORMATION:According to a New Hanover Regional Medical Center retirement announcement in 2015, Eakins graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Phi Beta Kappa and received a medical degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, where he was a Reynolds Scholar. He served as president of the New Hanover County Board of Health and the New Hanover and Pender County Medical Society, and was chairman of the NHRMC Department of Medicine from 1996-1998.

TOREN DAVIS
TITLE: D.O. Medical Director/ Faculty Physician
ORGANIZATION: NHRMC Physician Group–Coastal Family Medicine
WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID: “Dr. Davis has amazing qualities both as a doctor and as an attending (teacher to our residents). As a physician, he often goes above and beyond for patients in a compassionate way.

Dr. Davis often spends his own free time thinking of ways to teach residents how to relate to their patients. His teaching style is innovative and makes learning fun!

Dr. Davis is a team player and always makes our entire office feel part of a team!

Dr. Davis encourages everyone’s perspective to be heard before decisions are made for our clinic.

Dr. Davis uses out-of-the-box, innovative thinking to overcome barriers and serve our patients. This is particularly impressive given that a large proportion of our patients have limited financial resources.

He does not allow this to be a barrier to their care and teaches residents to overcome these challenges.”
