Surgilūm Partners To Expand Its Canadian Reach

By Johanna Cano, posted Aug 30, 2018
Wilmington-based Surgilūm has partnered with Labtician Ophthalmics Inc. to expand its global reach to Canada.

With the partnership, one of its products, RoboMarker, will be made available in Canada by Labtician Ophthalmics in the coming weeks, according to a news release.

Surgilūm manufactures products for ophthalmic surgeries that are currently distributed in the U.S., Europe and Australia, officials said.

RoboMarker, Surgilūm's first product, is a corneal marker that leaves longer lasting marks for cataract surgeries and works within one degree of accuracy, according to the press release.

With the marker, Canadian surgeons will be more efficient during operations by reducing the amount of time they spend marking the eye, the news release stated.

Surgilūm Principal and President Debbie Brown said the company partnered with Labtician Ophthalmics after hearing demand for its products outside the U.S.

“We were having surgeons from other countries talk to us and saying, ‘I wish we could get your products in our country,’” Brown said.

Surgilūm was founded in 2014 by Alan Brown, an ophthalmologist who began to develop products with the goal of making eye surgeries easier.

The company has another product, iLight Speculum, which is a self-illuminating speculum that doesn’t produce glares by illuminating the eye from the side, Brown said.

The new product is not yet in full production. It is currently available in limited quantities and will available for larger orders in about a month.

Labtician Ophthalmics plans to carry iLight Speculum and other Surgilūm products as they become available, according to the release.

Labtician Ophthalmics is a Canada-based commercialization partner that provides an ophthalmic marketplace that includes medical devices, natural health products and therapeutic agents in Canada.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to continue to deliver on our corporate goal of ‘bringing innovation to practice’ with the introduction of the Surgilūm line of advanced products, beginning with the RoboMarker,” Labtician Ophthalmics President Polydor Strouthos, said in the release.

Surgilūm, a woman-owned company, looks forward to more growth, Brown said. The company started a residency program last year and is working to update their website.

“We have things in developmental stages,” Brown said. “We are always developing new things.”
