Brunswick County officials are making a big play to win even bigger economic players.
The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners is looking at spending nearly $19 million on about 539 acres in the Mid-Atlantic Industrial Rail Park to boost its efforts to recruit businesses to come to the county.
The park is a more than 1,000-acre industrial site with access to the CSX rail line not far from the Port of Wilmington.
The Brunswick board on Tuesday unanimously voted to have county staff publish a notice for a public hearing Sept. 18 that is required before the board can vote on the purchase of the Mid-Atlantic Industrial Rail Park land.
"If approved, the county will fund the local payment with available revenues in the County’s General Fund," according to the public hearing notice. "The Board believes this property will incentivize businesses which shall stimulate and stabilize the local economy and result in the creation of new, permanent jobs in the County."
The public hearing will be held during the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners' next regular meeting set to begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Commissioners Chambers located in the Administration Building at the Brunswick County Government Complex, 30 Government Center Drive, Bolivia.
Brunswick County government and economic development officials declined to offer any additional details about the potential purchase on Thursday afternoon.
