Commissioners To Consider Rezonings For More Than 500 Acres

By Cece Nunn, posted Nov 16, 2020
A rezoning request would change the zoning designations of about 350 acres, located at the southeast quadrant of the interchange of Interstate 40 and Interstate 140, from heavy industrial and R-15, residential district, to R-10, residential district. (NHC)
The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to consider rezoning requests today that could add hundreds of homes to the county in what would be two separate communities on more than 500 acres.

The separate rezoning requests, if approved, would allow a developer to eventually put a mix of housing in two communities, one with 158.65 acres at the northeast quadrant of the interchange of Interstate 40 and Interstate 140 and the other with 350 acres at the southeast quadrant.

The homes built there could help meet the area's ongoing demand for workforce housing, officials with development firm Trask Land Company Inc. have said.

The I-140 split is the reason for the two applications and for the planning of two separate communities, Gardner Noble of Trask Land said previously.

"We envision for the property single-family homes, townhomes and apartments," he said.

The land has been owned by the Trask family for decades. In October, the New Hanover County Planning Board recommended approval of the requests.

The Board of Commissioners meeting starts at 4 p.m. today at the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse at 24 N. Third St. in downtown Wilmington. The meetings are broadcast live on NHCTV (Spectrum channel 13 and Charter channel 5) and streamed live online at NHCTV.com, according to the meeting notice.

Meetings are also archived and can be viewed on-demand at any time.
