Angie Lawrence, an Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) educator in Brunswick County, has earned the Ngaire Van Eck Award.
The award honors outstanding EFNEP educators who have a desire to enhance their programming through professional development. Funds are used in support of approved professional development opportunities, according to a news release.
EFNEP is a program of the N.C. State Extension.
Lawrence "has been a dedicated EFNEP Educator since March of 2020. She has consistently demonstrated excellence in programming through her innovative approaches and commitment to nutrition education. Angie’s commitment to personal development is also evident in her continuous pursuit of education and professional growth. Her decision to focus on a Health and Fitness Science Certificate aligns with her goal of integrating fitness and nutrition education into her future plans," the release stated.
Ngaire van Eck served as EFNEP coordinator in North Carolina from 1989 until her retirement in 1997. She came to North Carolina after a teaching career abroad, in New Zealand – her native land – and Uganda, East Africa. She then spent 17 years as a state specialist with Cooperative Extension EFNEP in West Virginia. Her focus of interest was maternal and infant health, and during her years at N.C. State University, she helped establish two EFNEP projects with the WIC program.
