Winners Of Health Care Heroes Awards Revealed

Winners and finalists in the Greater Wilmington Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes Awards were recognized at an event Friday at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center.

The 2024 Health Care Heroes category winners were:

  • Community Achievement: Socorro Costa and Wendy Holdsworth, Clinic Director of Christ Community Clinic and Executive Director of El Cuerpo and Clinic Director of Christ Community Clinic, Christ Community Church
  • Health Care Executive: Angela Ives, Executive Director, Community Care of the Lower Cape Fear
  • Innovation in Health Care: Taylor Bazemore, MD, Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute
  • Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant: Kendra Kellermann, FNP, Child Medical Evaluation Provider, Carousel Child Advocacy Center
  • Nurse: Julie King, BSN, RN/Chronic Care Manager, Wilmington Health
  • Physician: Lekeshia Jarrett, Family Medicine Physician, Wilmington Health
  • Unsung Hero: Karen Monroe, Device Clinic Coordinator, Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute
  • Volunteer: Tony Dunn, Volunteer, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center
Bonnie Jeffreys Brown, the longtime head of the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, was honored as the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Business Journal has put on the Health Care Heroes awards program since 2013 to honor the people and organizations making an impact on the quality of health care in the region. They are nominated by patients, peers, co-workers and families.
