Madelyn Wampler has been selected to serve as New Hanover County’s sustainability manager, a new position assigned to the County Manager's Office, beginning Oct. 1, according to a news release.
Wampler brings more than 10 years of extensive experience in sustainability, environmental policy and project management, the release stated. She joins New Hanover County after serving as the sustainability analyst for development services for the city of Encinitas, California.
In that role, she led the development and adoption of a new Green Building and Energy Ordinance and coordinated multiple coastal flooding adaptation grants and projects with state and federal entities, according to the release.
County Manager Chris Coudriet stated in the release, “Her depth of experience in environmental policy, coupled with her proven ability to lead and implement sustainability initiatives, makes her an invaluable addition to our county as we continue to advance our resilience and sustainability goals.”
Wampler holds a bachelor's degree in environmental science from UNC Chapel Hill and a master’s in biological sciences from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
According to the release, "Her career has been marked by significant contributions to sustainability and resilience efforts across various organizations, including California Sea Grant and the Port of San Diego. During her time with these agencies, she managed multi-million-dollar federal research awards, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and securing substantial funding and entitlements for innovative blue technology projects."
The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners approved the new sustainability manager position during the FY24-25 budget process, the release stated.
