Bernice S. Johnson joined the N.C. Azalea Festival's board this year, according to a news release.
Johnson is a native of Winston-Salem who moved to Wilmington in 1998 after graduating from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. She later graduated from the Keller Graduate School of Management, receiving a master's degree in project management and an MBA with a concentration in project management.
She currently serves as senior project manager in the development services division at Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.
Johnson "is known for her leadership and dedication to service evidenced by her active involvement in community endeavors, particularly those focused on youth enrichment," the release stated. "She believes that 'service is key' and has many years of service volunteering with the local PTAs. In 2023, she completed her term as State Secretary for the North Carolina PTA."
Her community engagement extends to various organizations, notably the Azalea Festival, where she initially contributed as a member of the Performing Arts Stage/Multicultural Committee, according to the release.
"Bernice also served as Chair of the Azalea Festival Queen’s Dance Party, Co-Chair of the Azalea Festival Hospitality Committee, and Co-Chair of the Azalea Festival Youth Art & Writing Contest," the release stated.
In addition to her civic contributions, Johnson is an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Jack and Jill of America Inc. She is a Wilmington Chamber Ambassador and a 2024 graduate of Leadership Wilmington.
Johnson is married to Atiba D. Johnson and has two children, Amir and Atiya.
