The Wilmington office of McKim & Creed has earned national recognition for exemplary engineering achievement, according to a news release.
The award, from the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 57th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA), was given to the firm for performing detailed scans of the Troy Lock and Dam in Troy, New York, the release stated.
"The Troy Lock and Dam ensures safe navigation of $6 billion of commerce annually. McKim & Creed provided the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New York District with high-accuracy digital scans of the lock, including the concrete structures, buildings, floor grates, vaults, and bulkhead recesses," according to the release. "Utilizing hydrographic surveying, aerial mapping, terrestrial scanning, and conventional surveying, the project team also collected a survey-grade light-detection and ranging (LiDAR) point cloud and photographs."
The data was delivered in a 3D walk-through tool, allowing engineers to immerse themselves virtually in the site to determine areas of rehabilitation effectively and safely, the release stated.
"This technologically advanced project ultimately saved both time and costs in performing assessments of the structure," according to the release.
The release stated the project was among 203 entries this year representing engineering excellence from throughout the nation and the world. Judging for the awards program—known industry-wide as the “Academy Awards of the engineering industry”– took place in February and was conducted by a national 26-member panel. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value and generating excitement for the engineering profession, according to the release.
Recognition of all award winners including top winners—16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards and the prestigious Grand Conceptor Award for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement—will take place during the 2024 EEA Gala on May 15, to be held at the Grand Hyatt in Washington DC.
