The Board of Directors of the Pender County Humane Society recently announced that Samantha Harvey and Shawn Roberts were elected to the board.

The board determined that their qualifications, experience and attitude "will be very beneficial to the operation of the board, the shelter and to the animals in our care."

Harvey also volunteers at the shelter on weekends.

Roberts (pictured at right) is a commercial real estate broker at KBT Commercial Realty-Keller Williams INNOVATE in Wilmington. An Air Force Veteran, he graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia in 2008 after studying history, political science and philosophy, according to the release.

Prior to his career in real estate, he worked as a professional chef. His past nonprofit experience includes working with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program Veterans Mural and the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial, the release stated.

"Shawn lives with his rescue dog, Archer, who is a Jack Russell-Chihuahua mix. Shawn has fostered or rescued several dogs over the years."

PCHS has a no-kill shelter located in Burgaw that rescues animals from Pender and surrounding counties, relying primarily on donations and fundraising events to operate.
