Wilmington Chamber Recognizes Award Winners

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Mar 9, 2021
Robert Rippy, owner of Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park, has been recognized as the 2021 recipient of the Duke Energy Lifetime Achievement in Business Award, according to a news release from the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber recognized Rippy with the award at its annual meeting in February, officials said. Two people were also recognized as Corning STEM Educators of the Year.

"The Duke Energy Lifetime Achievement in Business Award recognizes a local business leader who best represents sustained achievement and business longevity throughout a distinguished career," stated the release. "Winners have demonstrated a strong connection to the local economy, to the community, and they’ve inspired others to achieve similar success."

Rippy, who founded Jungle Rapids in 1997, is a longtime entrepreneur and local business leader. He has also been involved in many state, local and national boards, including the chamber's board.

Rippy has also been an active member of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions for over 20 years and led the organization as chairman of the board in 2011.

Melissa Taylor, of Cape Fear Elementary School in Pender County, and Jordan McEwen, of Roland Grise Middle School in New Hanover County, were also recognized by the chamber as the Corning STEM Educators of the Year, stated the release.

"The Corning STEM Educator of the Year Award provides an opportunity to recognize educators who excel by engaging students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) both in the classroom and in the community," stated the release. "These educators implement innovative, inquiry-based programs that address real-world problems. Our winners are local educators who focus on developing critical problem-solving skills and inspiring their students to pursue STEM fields vital to Corning and Wilmington’s future."
