Global Nuclear Fuel's New Product Operating At Two U.S. Nuclear Plants

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Jun 28, 2017
Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) has launched a new product that is now operational at two nuclear power plants in the United States.

The ACUMEN core monitoring system, designed by GNF, became the official system at the Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station in New Jersey in April and another nuclear plant in the Midwest in March, according to a news release from GE.

Once installed, the ACUMEN system monitors and predicts fuel performance through advanced software based on neutron instrumentation inputs, providing plant operators with data they need to improve the performance of the reactor core, according to the release.

This “next generation system” follows production of the legacy GNF 3D MONICORE system, which has provided core monitoring at more than 20 nuclear power plants over the past three decades, according to company officials.

“This product is significant for us in that it will deliver benefits to the industry and solidifies our position as a boiling water reactor technology leader,” GE Spokesman Jon Allen said.

GNF, a GE-led joint venture with Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp., operates primarily through Global Nuclear Fuel-Americas LLC in Wilmington and Global Nuclear Fuel-Japan Co. Ltd. in Kurihama, Japan.

“These plant installations are the culmination of years of extensive design and development performed by GNF engineers,” said Amir Vexler, CEO of GNF. “The ACUMEN core monitoring system unites plant data, engineering and analytics to enhance decision making.”

The news comes a month after GNF announced in May that its newest fuel product, GNF3, completed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved process for new fuel product introductions. GNF3 has been touted by the company as its "next generation fuel design."

GNF is a world supplier of boiling water reactor fuel and fuel-related engineering services.
