Signs on the facade of The STEM Labs at Mayfaire Town Center were gone Tuesday.
Tina and Brad Catalone of The STEM Labs announced the closure of their educational center at 820 Town Center Drive in a recent email to customers.
The Catalones had no further comment on the closure Tuesday morning. The doors were locked and a "closed" sign was hanging in the window at the storefront around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Explaining the closure, the email from the Catalones said, "This year has raised a new challenge for STEM education, and the educational sector at large. This is especially true with hands-on, activity-based learning models."
The STEM Labs opened in 2018 at Mayfaire Town Center and upon opening contained a large activity room as well as specialty rooms for robotics and coding, chemistry and biology, computer work and individual tutoring. It also held equipment allowing students to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum.
The center was offering new and gently used toys and games for 50%-75% off through Sunday, Nov. 29, according to the email. The STEM Labs was also selling its furniture.
Of the soon-to-be unoccupied space, Mayfaire spokeswoman Paige Coniglio said in an email, "Our leasing team is working with a number of potential tenants, but I can’t make any announcements until leases are signed."
This year, Mayfaire Town Center and adjacent Mayfaire Community Center have lost several tenants, including home decor store Pier 1, where Hickory Farms has set up shop, and children's clothing retailer Justice. Covenant Moravian Church is hosting Dewey’s Bakery from Nov. 27 through Dec. 24 at 6869 Main St., the former home at the town center of clothing retailer New York & Company.
Amid challenges caused by COVID-19, the owner of Mayfaire Town Center, CBL & Associates Properties Inc. has filed for bankruptcy, although officials have said "day-to-day operations and business of the company’s wholly owned, joint venture and third-party managed shopping centers will continue as normal."
