Silverhammer Design, a retail store featuring custom-made furniture pieces and art made by a husband-and-wife team, has opened at The Cotton Exchange.

The store, opened by Lorrie and Dennis Brewer at 312 Nutt St., provides a showroom for the design and build company that has been operating since 2015.

Silverhammer focuses on industrial and modern styles but can create a variety of custom pieces based on the customer’s requests.

“We can take your style of what you like, from traditional to bohemian to art deco, and build you something in the right species of wood, the right stain, the right paint or metal effects that you want,” Lorrie Brewer said. “One of the logos that my husband likes to use is ‘Our only limitation is your imagination.’ My husband builds all of our furniture with wood and steel. We try to do local wood. I do our arts. Oil on canvas is my medium, but I also do assemblage and encaustic art.”

Assemblage art involves the use of 3D objects, and encaustic art uses hot wax mixed with paint.

The furniture is made at the Silverhammer workshop in Brunswick County, which is where the Brewers currently reside.

The space also carries unusual pieces that Lorrie and Dennis find from different manufacturers, Lorrie Brewer said.

The design company was previously located in Lancaster County in South Carolina but mostly operated in the Charlotte market, doing upfitting for restaurants and breweries.

Silverhammer Design has worked with restaurants in the region, including Castaways Raw Bar & Grill and Dock House Seafood & More, both in Holden Beach.

The couple decided to open Silverhammer Design at The Cotton Exchange because it was a good fit for the store.

“Because our style is more artistic, and I'm an artist, we felt like that area downtown would be perfect for us,” Lorrie Brewer said. “The Cotton Exchange has so many unique stores and restaurants there already -- we felt would be a good step for us.”

Silverhammer is a member of the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County and is part of the monthly Fourth Friday Gallery Walk.

“We specialize in the unusual; we like to be completely different than anything else we see out there,” Lorrie Brewer said. “We will continue to evolve into what it needs to be, but I think our goal would be to be able to work with local designers and local businesses who want something very unique and different for their space.”
