On Alan Murphy’s to-do list Monday: ship seven pairs of Asics sneakers to China.

“It cost a fortune to get them shipped, but they can’t find them in China yet,” said Murphy, president of Coastal Kicks. “We have them here in little old Wilmington.”

Murphy opened Coastal Kicks on North Second Street in downtown Wilmington two years ago, and this month, the shoe and clothing store moves to 271 N. Front St., where Murphy will have nearly three times the amount of floor space and about twice the storage capacity he does now.

Murphy said one of the ways the store has found success is through gaining exclusive access to top-tier fashion sneakers.

“We provide a product that nobody else sells. We don’t do anything fake,” said Murphy, a former car salesman who had never worked in the retail fashion business until he opened Coastal Kicks.

More space means the ability to bring in more brands, Murphy said.

“People want to be different, and shoes have become a way they express their individuality,” he said.

Coastal Kicks will remain at its original 201 N. 2nd St. location until the new store opens. Murphy said he plans to hold a grand opening celebration Aug. 22.

John Hinnant, a commercial broker with Maus, Warwick, Matthews & Company, represented the landlord in the transaction.

Coastal Kicks is taking over the space that used to house Von Barkee’s Dog Spa & Bakery, which is now located at 215 Water St., Unit 105.
