The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce has named its Winter 2020 Golden Pineapple Award winners, with five Southport businesses receiving the award in the category of food and drink.
Golden Pineapple Awards are given quarterly to those businesses nominated by their customers for providing consistent and exceptional customer service.
“Consistent and exceptional customer service is the foundation of a thriving small business,” said Karen Sphar, executive vice president of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. “We chose to incorporate the pineapple into this award because it is the international symbol of hospitality.”
The awardees include Moore Street Market, Mr. P’s Bistro, Southport Cheese Shoppe, Uncorked by the Sea and Gourmet to Go and Catered Affairs.
Moore Street Market, 130 East Moore St., is described by owners Bridget Reichhart and Andrew Laing as a cross between a coffee shop, a deli and a cafe. A popular gathering space for the community, the market opens for breakfast at 7 a.m. each day serving fresh hot coffee from Larry’s Beans in Raleigh and its well-known breakfast sandwich, The Garrison, with egg, Boar’s Head ham and cheddar cheese, grilled onions and roasted red peppers on rye bread.
Mr. P’s Bistro, 309 N. Howe St., serves dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with a menu focused on Low Country cuisine, Certified Angus Beef, fresh, local seafood and homemade desserts. Mr. P’s offers a well-rounded wine list and several specialty martinis – the most popular being the Scarletini, made with raspberry vodka, PAMA Pomegranate Liqueur, muddled lemon, lime and orange slices and a splash of cranberry juice. Southport Cheese Shoppe, 417 N. Howe St., opened in March 2016. Owners Lisa and Eric Stettner carry a wide variety of cheeses, both imported and domestic, as well as imported olive oils and vinegars, fresh bread flown in from New York and New Jersey, New York Bagels, fresh pasta, condiments, olives, and charcuterie. They also specialize in grazing boards featuring many of these items.
Uncorked by the Sea, 602-A N. Howe St., is an art gallery and bottle shop featuring local and regional art as well as wine and craft beer. Uncorked hosts a weekly wine tasting on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m. with a different theme each week. They also host wine dinners and can accommodate private parties for charitable events or celebrations. Uncorked is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., to 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
Gourmet to Go and Catered Affairs, 105 W. George St., offers daily meals for pickup or delivery, and daily menus can be found on Facebook or by signing up for its newsletter. Orders can then be placed by phone for a single or double order. The business also offers vegan, gluten-free and heart healthy options, and full-service catering is available.
