Los Portales Taqueria To Open Second Location

Los Portales Taqueria owners Miguel and Ramon Villasenor have signed a lease at 39 Van Campen Blvd. for a second location of their popular eatery.

Miguel Villasenor said the brothers have been so busy at their current location on South Kerr Avenue that they feel their customer base can easily support an additional location that offers more seating and parking.

“We are looking forward to having a space that is larger and will allow our customers to stay longer and enjoy themselves,” Miguel Villasenor said.

The Villasenors also own Los Portales Supermarket, 912 S. Kerr Ave., and Tequila Comida & Cantina, 5607 Carolina Beach Road in Monkey Junction.

The owners say they will offer the same menu as Los Portales, but in addition to beer, they will have an expanded list of Mexican-inspired cocktails such as micheladas. Micheladas are similar to Bloody Marys but prepared with Mexican beer instead of vodka and made with a variety of juices, sauces and garnishes.

“These drinks are extremely popular in Mexico,” Miguel Villasenor said. “Once people see them, they’re going to want to have one. They look very appetizing.”

When asked if he was at all concerned about the high turnover rate at the Van Campen Boulevard location, Miguel Villasenor responded:

“When you do the right thing, you are successful. People know us and I think we will do well.”

The building, which most recently housed Coach’s Neighborhood Grill, is now under renovation, and the brothers are planning to travel to Mexico this month to purchase furniture and decor. An early November opening is expected.
