141 North Front Restaurant & Lounge has closed its doors after just over a year in business.

Darryl Brown and Lewis Hines Jr. opened the restaurant and lounge in the spring of last year, bringing a mix of classic Southern fare and jazz music to the space formerly occupied by Sunny Sushi & Lounge.

During the past year, Brown suffered some significant setbacks with his health and said it was in his personal best interest to close the restaurant and focus on his health. Brown also said that overall sales at the restaurant were not as strong as he had hoped.

“I think we had a really good thing going,” Brown said. “It was a good run, but in order to focus on my health this was the best decision.”

The 141 N. Front St. property is owned by Gold Walker, who purchased the building in 2005. It was Walker who transformed the building from a dress shop into a multi-level restaurant and lounge, with her first tenants being Tre Benzios Restaurant & Lounge.

“It’s a very unique building,” Walker said. “I don’t think there is anything else like it downtown.”

Walker said she was sorry to see 141 North Front Restaurant & Lounge close.

“It’s an unfortunate situation and I feel for Mr. Brown,” Walker said.

Walker said the approximately 4,800-square-foot space is currently available for lease.

“I hope to find the right tenant to really make the most of this space,” Walker said. “It takes a real workhorse to run a successful restaurant, it’s by no means an easy business.”

As for Brown, he said he hopes to have another go at a downtown establishment.

“Downtown is where it’s at,” Brown said. “And I’m not saying I won’t ever be back.”
