Vegetarians, vegans and those looking to increase their consumption of meatless meals now have a new burger alternative that’s popping up on menus across town.
The Impossible Burger, developed by a team of scientists, farmers and chefs at Impossible Foods, a Silicon Valley-based research facility, is made entirely from plants.
The Impossible Burger website claims that, “compared to cows, the Impossible Burger uses 95% less land, 74% less water, and creates 87% less greenhouse gas emissions.”
The company is committed to discovering healthy, sustainable new ingredients from nature and changing the course of how food production impacts the planet and our bodies.
Impossible Burgers are now available at 15 locations in North Carolina, including at least three locally: Beach Bagels, Winnie's Tavern and Wrightsville Beach Brewery. Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar in Carolina Beach has also carried the burger, but according to manager Chad Jeffrey, they have experienced distribution issues as far as receiving the number of burgers needed to keep it as a regular menu item.
“It’s an absolutely delicious burger and we will definitely carry it again as soon as we can be assured that we have the quantities available for the high volume of meals we serve,” Jeffrey said. “It was a great seller for us.”
Wrightsville Beach Brewery chef Jeffrey Porter speaks highly of the burger’s likeness to the real thing.
“If you cook this burger correctly, it looks just like a medium-rare burger,” Porter said. “We did a blind tasting and were hard-pressed to tell the difference. It’s a really good product.”
Porter said that one downfall is the price of the Impossible Burger. He said the wholesale price is so high that it drives his price up to $14, which still leaves the brewery with a higher food cost percentage than most items. That being said, he has been experimenting with his own plant-based mixtures for vegan burgers.
Wrightsville Beach Brewery serves its Impossible Burger on a pretzel bun with lettuce, tomato, onion and Rasta sauce – a mayo-based sauce with sweet chili, cumin and rice wine vinegar.
At Beach Bagels, the Impossible Burger is on special for the month of May, and is served with black bean cilantro jalapeño hummus, spinach, tomato, onion and avocado on the bagel of your choice for $9.99.

Correction: The price of the Impossible Burger at Wrightsville Beach Brewery has been corrected. A previous version listed an incorrect amount. Also, Winnie's Tavern was added to the local restaurants that carry the item on their menus.
