Phil and Patty Santomassi, former owners of Beach Bagels and Donut Inn, plan to open Mr. Bagel Meister in Masonboro Commons sometime next week.

While the centerpiece will of course be 20 varieties of homemade, old-fashioned bagels, Phil Santomassi stresses that this is not your average bagel shop.

“We’ve really tried to think outside the box on this,” he said. “We’ll be trying out a whole bunch of ideas and have plenty of room to grow.”

In fact, Phil Santomassi has already alluded to a possible partnership with Emerging Franchises, a locally based franchise development company.

Dine-in and carry-out service will be available, as well as full breakfast and lunch catering. The 1,200-square-foot store will offer both indoor and outdoor seating and has a drive-thru. Call ahead ordering is always available for quick service at the drive-thru.

Breakfast will include made-to-order omelets, egg sandwiches, hash browns and homemade square-cut glazed donuts that will sell for $6 a dozen.

Lunch will feature Boar’s Head deli sandwiches available on bagels, homemade hard rolls or wraps, quesadillas and Bagel Meister dogs – create-your-own hot dogs with everything from traditional toppings such as onions and sauerkraut to Mexican toppings such as refried beans and guacamole. Mr. Bagel Meister will also serve hand-cut fries and Patty Santomassi’s homemade pound cake.

Earlier this year, Phil Santomassi told the Business Journal that after researching several areas of town for this venture, he feels that the area between Monkey Junction and Carolina Beach continues to experience growth and that there is a demand for homemade, quick-service breakfast and lunch options in the area.

Mr. Bagel Meister is located at 6400 Carolina Beach Road in Masonboro Commons. Go to the restaurant's Facebook page for updates on opening day.
