Intracoastal Angler owner Phillip David opened the doors Monday to Intracoastal Seafood Market, a store dedicated to locally caught seafood.
Although David has practiced law for the past 30 years, recreational fishing is a hobby he has always shared with his three sons. He bought Intracoastal Angler 10 years ago and moved it from off of Wrightsville Avenue to its current location at 6332 Oleander Drive.
“At Intracoastal Angler, we deal with a lot of people who are catching large amounts of fish in local waters,” said David. “It’s always been at the back of my mind to open another business to help support local commercial fishermen."
David purchased the lot at 5039 Oleander Drive five years ago with the intent to one day open another business on the property. When he met Selby Lewis a few years back, the two began discussing the idea of a fish market.
Lewis is a veteran commercial fisherman, having spent the past 30 years fishing in the waters surrounding the Port City. David had the desire to help local commercial fishermen sell their catch and Lewis had the desire to spend a little less time on the boat.
“I’ve been doing this since I was 12 years old,” Lewis said. “You kind of get addicted to it, but I’m ready to have some more time with my family and I’ll be happy to go out on the boat just a couple of times a week.”
And so Lewis will manage Intracoastal Seafood, bringing with him a large circle of contacts within the commercial fishing industry who are eager to help supply a new outlet.
“This is something we’re very excited about and hope that people will be glad to have a place where they can easily access fresh seafood,” David said.
For now, customers can expect to find locally caught black sea bass, wahoo, triggerfish, vermillion snapper and grouper, said Lewis. The market will bring in oysters, clams and shrimp as well as tuna, flounder and catfish, just to name a few.
Intracoastal Seafood will also carry a variety of condiments, seafood breading and sauces, and hopes to carry some fresh produce in the coming months.
