Nekillim Foodservice Group, owned and operated by father-and-son team Lloyd and Jeff Milliken, has secured the rights to franchise Steak ‘N Shake throughout southeastern North Carolina, as well as the Greenville/Spartanburg region of South Carolina.

Steak ‘N Shake was founded by Gus Belt in 1934. Belt ground premium steaks into burgers and served hand-spun milkshakes at his Normal, Illinois, restaurant. Today there are over 550 Steak ‘N Shake locations in 28 states, according to the company’s website.

“We were very impressed with Steak ‘N Shake’s system of operations as well as the quality and taste of the food,” Jeff Milliken said. “The burgers are still made from a mix of ribeye, T-bone and sirloin steaks, and the taste is far superior to any other fast food burger. Once you eat one, you’ll be back.”

The Nekillim Group’s first location is due to open in Jacksonville this fall. It has secured property in Shallotte and is currently in the process of closing on a Market Street property in Wilmington that will serve as its corporate headquarters. The group is also looking at locations in Southport, New Bern and Lumberton and has plans for additional Wilmington locations once these areas are up and running.

Milliken said the Wilmington location, planned for 5023 Market St., is expected to open early next spring.
